I always love finding new ways to make plain things a little more personalized. Needle felting is something I accidentally stumbled into and I’m already excited to do it again. It’s really fun and quite easy! I thought this would be a fun way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!
I’m doing something a little bit different this time and I’m hoping it make it a little easier for you! I created a video to demonstrate how I achieved this cool look.
The tools I used to do this simple needle felting embellishment can be found here:
I started by cutting out the shape I wanted then put it on the sweater where I wanted it. You don’t need to be very exact about this because it’s just more of a guideline.
Next I traced around the edge with tailor’s chalk. Again, I wasn’t super exactly about this. The general shape should get you the desired look you’re going for!
Then, I inserted in the roving mat. I separated the wool and started building up my shape. You won’t need very much wool at all. In fact you’ll be surprised how little you really need!
Once you get your shape the way you want, continue poking the felt with your needle until it’s nice and compact. I probably could have done this for longer but I kind of liked the look of it being a little fuzzy.
Then I washed the sweater on delicate then tumble dried it to get the chalk out, and felt the wool a little more. I was worried doing this and will probably try to avoid putting it in the wash much, but it did a good job getting the chalk out and unifying the shape a little more!
Then you’re done! It really is so simple. I got this sweater on clearance from Walmart for $5 and just knew I could do something cool with it. Who am I kidding; I bought two. What shape should I do next? I feel like a little felt bunny for Easter might be cute!
