Make flocked pine cones with this easy tutorial using just Epsom salt and Mod Podge. This would be an easy craft to do as a group or kids too!

This tutorial is so simple it hurts. I created a video for you so you can see exactly what steps I used to get this beautiful, fresh fallen snow look!

I have so many Christmas DIYs so you may want to peruse them.

Did you find some ugly small pine cones you don’t want to have flocked? Try tie-dyeing with them. No really!

I am so excited for Christmas that I could explode! At my recent expo, there was a nice couple selling huge pinecones and when I bought seven, my husband thought I had lost my mind. But 7 pinecones for $10 is an amazing deal!

It is so easy to make these pinecones beautiful and sparkly! You'll never belive what I used to get these pinecones to looks like they have snow on their tips.

Materials You’ll Need

Before we dive into the fun part of crafting, gather the following materials:

  1. Pine cones: Collect pine cones from your yard or purchase them from a craft store.
  2. Epsom salt: This will be the “snow” in your flocking project.
  3. Mod Podge: This adhesive and sealant will help the Epsom salt stick to the pine cones.
  4. Paintbrush: A small, flat paintbrush or foam brush is ideal for applying the Mod Podge.
  5. Paper plate: You’ll put your Epsom salt in a thin layer on this plate so you can easily dip the pine cone in the salt.
  6. Wax paper or parchment paper: To protect your work surface from drips and spills.
  7. String or twine (optional): You can use this to hang the pine cones while they dry.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Flocked Pine Cones

  1. Prepare your workspace: Lay down wax paper or parchment paper to protect your work surface from any glue or salt drips.
  2. Clean and dry the pine cones: If you’ve collected pine cones from the outdoors, ensure they are clean and free of debris. You can clean them by gently shaking or brushing off any loose dirt or needles. Let them dry completely before starting the flocking process.
  3. Paint on the Mod Podge: Use a foam brush to apply the Mod Podge onto the tips of the pine cone.
  4. Apply the Epsom salt: Dip the wet pine cone into the Epsom salt to coat the Mod Podge in the salt.
  5. Hang to dry (optional): If you want to hang your pine cones as decorations, tie a piece of string or twine around the top of each pine cone and hang them in a well-ventilated area to dry. This step is optional; you can also place them on the wax paper to dry if you prefer.
  6. Allow drying time: Let the pine cones dry completely. This may take a few hours to overnight, depending on the thickness of the flocking mixture and humidity levels in your area.
  7. Display your flocked pine cones: Once they are fully dry, your pine cones are ready to be displayed. They make lovely additions to wreaths, centerpieces, or as standalone decorations.

I bought my Epsom salt in bulk from Costco while making bath salts and I love the way it looks like snow.

Other Ways to Snow Pine Cones

  • Flocking powder: You can purchase flocking powder and follow the instructions to get a well-bonded flocked look using just water and a strainer.
  • Flocking spray: I have found flocking spray at the Dollar Tree and it’s a super simple way to flock anything! This is a bit messy and I have found doesn’t bond quite as well, but it is a very easy and cheap way to achieve the look.
  • Fake Snow: This method is similar to the Epsom salt method. You’ll just apply Mod Podge and then attach the fake snow! This will give a fluffier look.
