$40 Easy Ikea Bar Stool DIY

Make over this IKEA bar stool in only 15 minutes. It will make a big impact and all you will need is a can of spray paint.

When we first started building our home I knew I needed counter stools for our large island. I searched and searched for something that would go with what else I was planning and pretty much everything I loved was at least $100 per stool. My husband really wanted a stool with a backrest which made my options even slimmer.

We went to Ikea and when I saw these Franklin IKEA bar stools I knew they had some potential. The original gray of the metal would not look very good with my shiny chrome cabinet pulls and the gold I had all over the rest of the house. Enter spray paint.

I am a little bit spray paint happy. The first step is admitting you have a problem, right? It’s just so easy and can make things look so pretty! Especially gold spray paint.

I’ve tried several types of gold spray paint but this Rustoleum gold has become my go to. (I can assure you this is not the only time you’ll see me using this.)

What you’ll need

This DIY is so simple. But it does require the following:

Some other barstools that can work for this (or that I would do something similar with!):

  • I love the adjustable factor of these. I also like the black of the seat a lot.
  • These are little more pricey but I love this style so much!
  • These are by far the least expensive option and are great if you don’t want a back. Plus, they’re also adjustable!
Directions

Start by unscrewing the back and seat off the metal parts of the bar stool. I made sure to lay them down exactly how I unscrewed them so I could remember how to put it all back together.

Tape off the parts you don’t want gold. I wanted to keep the little feet black as well as the foot bar.

Start spray painting! A few quick tips I’ve learned about spray painting: shake the can more than you even think is necessary. Regularly. It will make your life a lot easier. Spray at about 6-8 inches away or your paint might run. If you aren’t using the little sprayer attachment, make sure to note if buildup is occurring on the nozzle or it could drip globs of paint where you don’t want it.

I put the screws that would be visible back in after the first coat so that they could get some gold too.

We have three of these and I personally love the look of them in our kitchen. They look pretty nice for only $40 each if I do say so myself!

What is the size of the barstool?

These particular ones are the shorter size at 24 1/5″. However Ikea has both sizes available so if you have a bar height counter you are going to want the 29 1/5″ stool!

What is a bar height table?

If you are using these for counter stools like me, you don’t want to get the bar height. However if you have a table or counter that is a lot higher than your waist, you are going to want the bar heigh size. That makes bar height about 40″-42″ tall.

TOTAL COST:
  • $40 stool
  • $4 spray paint
  • $5 spray attachment (optional)
  • $3 tape
  • Total: $52

I had a few of these things on hand so only needed to spend $40!

An IKEA hack that will only cost you $40 and make a huge impact. It really doesn't get easier than this.

  1. Love these! Quick question, how is the gold holding up? I’d like to have a go but i’m concerned the gold will rub/scratch quite easily and start to look a bit nasty with use? How have you found them so far? Thanks 🙂

    1. Hey Alecia! It’s actually holding up really well. We’ve now had them three years and I haven’t even done a touch up! There are a few places where they are a little scratched but it’s not peeling or anything!
