Dye your eggs using natural dyes and hard boil them at the same time with this instant pot eggs tutorial. There are so many different color options!
We love our Instant Pot at our house for all sorts of things but I wanted to mix it up and see how dyeing and hard boiling eggs at the same time would go. It worked out so well! I’ve done instant pot eggs before but knew that with Easter coming I HAD to try some natural dyes.
The dyes I used pictured here were turmeric, avocado pits and skins, logwood and cochineal. I linked each way I created these vats of dye here for you. Really all you need to do is boil some water, pour it into different pint sized jars and add your dyestuffs you want to use. When you’re dyeing something on such a little scale, the measuring isn’t as important as a lot of my other huge fabric projects!
Naturally Dyed Instant Pot Eggs
Dye your eggs using natural dyes and hard boil them at the same time with this instant pot eggs tutorial. There are so many different color options!
Materials
- Raw Eggs
- Turmeric
- Cochineal
- Logwood
- Avocado Pits and Skins
- Water
Tools
- Instant Pot
- Oven Mits
- Pint Sized Jars
Instructions
- Make sure your jars are not too tall and will fit in your InstantPot before you put the dyestuffs in the jars.
- Create each different type of dye you'd like to use by boiling water and putting it in each jar with different dyestuffs. Get creative! Try different fruits and vegetables or maybe even pinecones.
- Allow your dye to soak for a bit. I let mine sit about 30 minutes. Place your metal rack on the bottom of the InstantPot before placing your jars in. Place the jars in your InstantPot with an egg in each jar. A couple of my jars could hold two eggs!
- Set your InstantPot to pressure cook for 6 minutes then naturally release for 6 minutes. Immediately place your eggs in ice water then let me dry and cool.

What do the eggs look like when they’ve been shelled?
Glad you asked. On one of my eggs that cracked a bit in the pot, it had a rad marble effect! The others didn’t have any color. Another one came apart and it dyed the hard boiled part of the egg.
Can you dye hollow egg shells?
Yes! Because they are hollow they won’t sink into the dye so they won’t be as even as the eggs that aren’t hollow. They still looked pretty cool!
How many eggs can you cook in an instant pot?
For this project, if you have the same Instant Pot linked above, you can fit 4 pint sized jars that would fit two eggs per jar. That means 8 eggs in one batch!
Can Eggs Touch in the Instant Pot?
Yes they totally can. They will be touching in the jars.
If you try these or any other colors please let me know! I’d love to hear how they turned out.
