These lava rock bookends let you bring a little bit of the beautiful desert landscape right into your home. And they’re so easy!
I was born and raised in Southern Utah where we have red rock and lava rock right outside our door.Living in such a beautiful place always makes me want to bring the landscape in with me! I thought it would be fun to put together a quick DIY with things you could find for free outside. It doesn’t get much more ‘budget friendly’ than rock collecting.
What you’ll need:
- Lava rock (or any rock of your choice!)
- Felt
- Hot Glue Gun
- Glossy Acrylic Sealant

First, you’ll need to go rock collecting! In Southern Utah there are plenty of places to do this. If you don’t have the luxury of living next to such beautiful landscapes, you can also buy them online.
Then you’ll wash all the dirt off your rocks. I rinsed them in super hot water then let them air dry.
Then spray them with acrylic sealant. This just makes them look a little more like bookends a little less like rocks. Definitely not totally necessary, but I think it finishes off the look a lot!
Next you’ll lay the rocks down in the position you want them on your shelf, and trace the base onto the felt. Cut the felt out inside the lines.
Add your hot glue to the felt and put your rock back on top. Wait for it to cool, and you’re done!
I am just loving the look of these lava rock bookends. I love bringing a natural touch into my home! People ask me where I bought them which is the best compliment of all.
