The first time I crocheted I think I was 8 or 9. All I really remember about it is no matter how hard I counted, the sides of my scarves were never straight. When We Are Knitters reached out to see if I’d like to try one of their kits I thought it would be a perfect time to give it another shot! I have also knitted before, but it just turned out the project I really wanted to do was a crochet project, and I’m so glad it was!
We Are Knitters is such a cool idea. You see a project you want to make, and they send you the materials to get it done. As I was crocheting my basket I thought, “this would be such a good gift for any crafter”. For the next baby shower I go to, I think I’m going to get the mom a kit because it was so easy to do while I was nursing and I didn’t have to keep going to the craft store to get more stuff! (I can’t be the only one that does this.)
Crocheting my Tangram Basket
When you buy your kit it comes with the right amount of yarn and your crochet hook or knitting needles. It also came with a little sewing needle for the last step of the project where you will finish it off.
Like I said above, I hadn’t crocheted in years. I had so much fun having it come back to me! It was like riding a bike. Once I started going I felt like saying ‘Oh yeah! This is fun!’ We Are Knitters has awesome tutorials for each stitch or method you need to do. My basket for example started off with a magic circle. I had never done one of these before but it was really easy with the tutorial they had on their website.
I messed up and had to restart this project FOUR times (not exaggerating.) The good thing about crochet is it is so simple to go back and start again! (But you will read the directions more closely so you don’t have to do this.) Part of why I kept restarting is because I had never worked in a circle before! I used the sewing needle to mark my spot of the first stitch of the circle so it made it easier to count (after the third time pulling it all out!)
Another reason I had to restart is because it turns out I learned to crochet in a slip stitch and I thought it was a single stitch! It made my basket more of a bowl and I could not figure out what was going on. Even if you know how to crochet, I would suggest watching their quick little tutorials of each stitch and method you need to use so you don’t have to start over once you get started!
If you prepare yourself, this basket will literally only take you 45 minutes tops! It was that quick, and was so fun. I love how it turned out and it is super functional.
Whether you have crocheted before or never crocheted before, I think you would find this fun. You can win a kit of your choice ($90 value!) by following me on Instagram and letting me know what kit you’d like if you won!! If you want to try your hand at knitting they have several patterns for that too! I am going to try knitting a blanket and then I think I want to try my hand at The Dill Shirt (PS how cute is this shirt?).
Do you have a crafter in your family who would love this kit as a gift? Maybe you want to get one for yourself to get back into crochet or knitting!
