Copper Triangle DIY Mobile

Sometimes I come up with an idea for a project and think “This will probably be a disaster” and it’s not! This turned out even better than I could have dreamed. I am so excited to share it with you because it’s something you can totally do in one afternoon when you get your little nesting itch or maybe even as a gift to a future mama friend.

There are not many things required for this DIY and they’re pretty inexpensive. Win-win! For details about my full nursery (including a lot of things you see in these pictures!) go here. I also did this marble top side table for nursery.

What you need for the DIY Mobile
  • 2 – 1/8 inch 2 ft copper pipes (I tried to grab the link for this item for you guys but they’re not on the Lowes website! They are in the store though. They were about $4 each next to all the other copper pipe)
  • String (I used black plastic lace)
  • 2 embroidery hoops ( I used an 8 inch and a 10 inch. It may have been a 9 inch, but I wish the sizes had been more variable so I’d suggest this pairing!)
  • Pipe cutter

You’ll start by cutting your pipe into 2.5 inch pieces. Each 2 foot pipe will make you 9 pieces, or 3 triangles.

Put three of your pipes on a string and tie the ends together to form a taught triangle. Leave enough string to tie the triangle onto the hoop. I mostly just eyeballed this!

After you’ve created each triangle, tie them onto your biggest inner hoop evenly spaced apart.

Then I took every other string and tied them to the inner hoop of the smaller embroidery hoop. This part was surprisingly difficult. It was hard to get them all the right length so the hoop would hang parallel! Just keep that in mind as you’re tying them.

Once you have everything tied, put your outer hoop back around the inner hoop.

The inner triangles weren’t hanging as high as I wanted so I wrapped them around the full hoops twice.

Then I tied some string to the top hoop to hang it from the ceiling with a little hook and was done!

You could really hang whatever you wanted, but I loved the simple geometric look of these triangles. I hope my little guy thinks it’s as neat as I do!

  1. This is such a cute DIY! I love the insdustrial look of it!
I actually made a couple mobiles, before my daughter was born, using embroidery hoops as well, but somehow never shared the tutorial on the blog. They’re just in the pictures. Hehe
