I love using avocado pits AND skins together. I realized I had never tried them separately so I tried it here to see if pits or skins or both will give me the best color. The methods are pretty similar but I was pretty surprised by the result.
What you need to dye with avocado pits
- Stainless Steel pot
- Avocado pits
- Natural fiber fabrics (cotton, rayon, linen, etc.)

Collect your avocado pits! I wash them off as best I can then stick them in a bag in my freezer. They have kept for as long as I’ve had them but I always end up using them within a year so I’m not sure about past that point.
Fill up your pot and put in your pits. Bring the water to a boil and then let the water simmer for at least an hour.
While this is happening I fold up my prewashed fabrics because I like the tie dye look.
I put them in the pot at this point and let them sit overnight.
After they have been sitting overnight they should have a nice pretty pink color to them. Rinse them until the water runs clear and then you are done.
It turns out the pits alone make a much lighter color. I was pretty surprised by this. I can’t wait to only dye with the skins and see what happens with those!
