I took this cheap vanity chair and gave it a little makeover using some tie dye and spray paint. It took me maybe 20 minutes!
I have this ugly stool I use as a vanity chair. So, I decided why not jazz it up a bit. This tutorial is really pretty dang simple. I have a video for you or you can just read through the step by steps. I also have the option for you to print it.
The link below will direct you to an IKEA stool very similar. This specific stool was a hand-me-down and I’m not entirely sure where it came from!
Get creative and do whatever color schemes you’d like! And please share! I would love to see your take on this little project.

What You Need for Your Cheap Vanity Chair
Tie Dye Fabric (Or really any scrap fabric. I used a tea towel!)
Here is my chair before!
If you prefer video instructions, then here they are!
Step by Step Instructions for Your Upcycle
- Prep your stool by wiping it down with a Clorox wipe
- Prep your surface where you will spray paint in a well ventilated area. I used a large flattened cardboard box.
- Spray paint the legs from a 6″-8″ distance. Use several light coats rather than one heavy coat so the paint doesn’t run.
- Allow the paint to dry until it is dry to the touch.
- OPTIONAL: Line your chair with fleece. I did this because I did not want any pink to show through. Cut the fleece to the size of the top of the stool. Hot glue gun it into place.
- Decide how you would like the top of your stool to look. Center the pattern how you’d like it.
- Put a couple of drops of hot glue onto the top of the chair to keep the towel in place.
- Flip the chair upside down and trim around the edges. Leave enough space for the fabric to stretch onto the bottom of the chair.
- Stretch the fabric taught and hot glue it to the bottom of the chair.
