Use this simple trick to make your flowers look more realistic whether you are keeping them on your counter or putting them on a shelf.
This month for our Inspire My Creativity link party the theme is ‘Flowers’. I have a few flower DIYs but I really wanted to share with you this simple trick to make your fake flowers look more realistic! You will notice when you tour model homes or go in nicely decorated places that they have their fake flowers using this little trick. You also may notice that you can buy faux flowers in vases like this but they tend to be more expensive than just doing it on your own!
What you need to make your fake flowers look more real
- Resin
- Fake flower
- Vase

Alumilite Amazing Casting Resin,
Obviously this will all depend on how realistic your fake flower looks to begin with. Michaels has some amazingly realistic silk flowers. This particular flower was our wedding flower and so I wanted to put in a vase that made it look not so fake.
Mix your resin using equal parts of each bottle. The slower you pour and stir, the less bubbles will exist in the final hardened resin.
Slowly pour the resin into your vase. Make sure there is enough resin to hold the stem in place. Mine had about 5/8″ worth of resin. I would have put more in but was worried about the baby tipping it over and getting it all over! You can always add more in later if you’d like.
Insert your stem so that it lays the way you’d like. I like that mine is kind of lopsided!
Allow the resin to harden overnight and you are done!
Often times the flower looks realistic but the leaves give away the fakeness of the stem. If your leaves are distracting from the look of the flower or are peeling away from the wire, simply take some wire cutters and cut them off. Real flowers rarely have their real leaves around the bloom anyway!
It may seem like a little thing, but this will make people believe it’s real because you have water in the vase. You could put real water in if you’d like too, but obviously that isn’t as permanent! This also allows for a more permanent home for your fake flower.
Be sure to check out the following projects all about flowers!! I love spring because I really love flowers so this is a fun round up of projects this time around.
Join us next month when we link up about the theme of ‘Spring’!!
That is so smart! The resin really does make it look like fresh flowers!
Love this idea!! So easy and doable! I use resin to make cups but never thought about using it for anything else. Thanks for sharing!
What an awesome idea! It really does make it look real. I think I need to get some resin!
Great idea! I have a love-hate with faux flowers but yours looks like it’s sitting in water. Visiting from Inspire My Creativity.
