We recently celebrated our 5 year anniversary and I wanted to make something special for my husband that would also be beautiful in our home. A big part of why I made it out of mostly wood is because wood with traditional 5 year gift!
If you’ve never used Knife Blade I wrote answered questions about the Cricut Knife Blade here!
What you need for your 5 year anniversary gift
- Balsa Wood 12×12
- Bass Wood 6×24
- Leather cut about 2″x12″
- Permanent Vinyl
- Cricut Maker
- Cricut Knife Blade
- Strong Grip Mat
- Hot Glue
- This cut file
I had 6″x24″ basswood so what I did very first was cut down my basswood to 6″x12″ with my True Control Knife on my Self Healing Mat.
Load your bass wood onto the strong grip mat and be sure to tape all four sides of your bass wood down with masking tape. This ensures your wood won’t slip. Do this. Believe me! You will regret it immediately if you don’t.
After your 5 is all cut out you will heat up your hot glue gun. This is how I applied both the leather and the 5. I wanted to add the touch of the leather because I wanted the 5 to raise above balsa wood as much as possible.
Allow your glue to dry and you will be all done. There is nothing holding the gap between the two forms of wood but this was on purpose so I could get some shadow! Just know that it will be a little bit fragile so your two year old probably shouldn’t get to play with this home decor item.
This is a subtle little project but I LOVE how it turned out. The two wood grains layered on top of each other really have a cool effect and the strip of leather adds a pop of contrast. After I finished this I realized this would be a great gift for a family of 5 as well!
