Step 1: Fold and Shape Your Ghost
Start with a damp towel—folding wet fabric helps accordion folds stick together. Fold the towel in half to find the center for a symmetrical design. Freehand a ghost outline with a washable marker, creating gentle zig-zags at the bottom for that classic floating ghost look.

Accordion-fold along the marked ghost outline, keeping folds tight and even. Wrap sinew around the folded shape three to five times, pulling tight with a sinew puller. This will create the bright white ghost silhouette inside the dark background of your DIY Halloween towel.

Step 2: Protect the White Ghost Area
To keep the ghost perfectly white, cover the bound area with plastic wrap. This prevents splatter when applying hot water and helps maintain clean edges for your ghost towel tie dye design.

Step 3: Add Color with Hot Water Irrigation Tie Dye
Set the folded towel on Magic Tracks or another draining surface. Sprinkle Thundercloud Procion dye onto the fabric.

Fill a one-gallon pump sprayer with boiling water. Mist the dye onto the towel from a distance to avoid splattering. The hot water irrigation tie dye method activates the color quickly and allows it to migrate beautifully through the fabric.

Let the towel sit for at least 15 minutes for lighter shades or overnight for deep, dramatic gray and purple tones. For more white contrast, rinse sooner.
Step 4: Rinse and Wash Thoroughly
Hot water irrigation projects can take extra time to rinse. Start with cool water to release loose dye, then switch to hot. Use a couple rounds of Dawn dish soap washes if needed before a final hot cycle in your washing machine.
