Create a bold and colorful Halloween tie dye shirt with this fun geode tutorial! Inspired by Halloween Town, this project uses six vibrant Procion colors to set rich, lasting color fast.

Note: This post was written from a Live I did on YouTube. (I got live on Saturdays!) So it wasn’t my usual setup with overhead footage. The pictures aren’t the best and I apologize but if you watch the video from about 24 minutes in you can see the full process and I’ll walk you through it as well as talk about fruit in jello. I know that’s exactly what you want to hear.
Supplies for a Halloween Tie Dye Shirt (Geode Design)
- 100% cotton t-shirt (pre-washed)
- Procion fiber reactive dyes: grape, soft orange, terracotta, teal, daffodil, and Thundercloud (dark gray/black)
- Soda ash (1 cup per gallon of warm water)
- Sinew and sinew puller for crisp geode rings
- Ice (for optional dye-under-ice sections)
- Rubber gloves and a draining rack or Magic Tracks
Step 1: Soak and Prep Your Shirt
Mix 1 cup soda ash per gallon of warm water and soak the shirt for at least 20 minutes. Wring until damp. This pre-treatment helps the Halloween tie dye shirt stay bright and washfast.
Step 2: Fold and Bind a Geode Pattern
Pinch a small section for the center of your first geode and wrap tightly with sinew three or four times. Keep adding nodules around the shirt, varying sizes and clustering for an organic geode look. The tighter the sinew, the whiter and sharper your rings will be.

Step 3: Add Six Spooky Colors
Inspired by Disney’s Halloween Town, this six-color palette—grape, soft orange, terracotta, teal, daffodil, and Thundercloud—creates a magical Halloween mix. Dust Thundercloud along each sinew line for dramatic outlines, then alternate the other shades between nodules. Use “dye under ice” if you’d like extra control and a slower blend.

Step 5: Rinse and Wash Thoroughly
Start with a cool-water rinse to remove loose dye. Switch to hot water, adding a squirt of Dawn dish soap if needed. Repeat until the water runs almost clear, then finish with a hot machine cycle. Geode projects take longer to rinse, but the brilliant rings are worth it.
Finished Halloween Tie Dye Shirt
The result is a one-of-a-kind Halloween tie dye shirt bursting with dramatic rings of purple, orange, yellow, teal, terracotta, and dark gray. Each geode fold creates unique crystal-like outlines, making every shirt perfect for spooky-season outfits or as a handmade gift.
