How to Reverse Tie Dye a Shirt with Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Yes, you read that right — I used toilet bowl cleaner to reverse tie dye this shirt. And honestly? The results were way cooler than I expected.

If you’re curious (or just a little chaotic), here’s exactly how I did it and how you can safely try it too.

What You’ll Need

  • A dark-colored 100% cotton shirt
  • Bleach-based toilet bowl cleaner (the gel kind that clings)
  • Gloves + well-ventilated area
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Water
  • Washing machine

Step 1: Prep the Shirt

Start with a wet shirt — it helps the bleach spread and develop more evenly. Lay it out on a protected surface (outside is best if you can).

Step 2: Apply the Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Wearing gloves, squirt the cleaner directly onto the shirt wherever you want the bleach effect. I did a sort of freeform squiggle design, but you could also follow folds or patterns for more structure.

Let it sit for about 20 minutes. You’ll see the color start to lift and turn orangey-red.

Step 3: Flip and Repeat

Flip the shirt over and do the same thing on the back. The bleach probably won’t soak all the way through on the first side, so this helps get more even coverage.

Step 4: Neutralize the Bleach

Don’t skip this part! After you get the look you want, you need to stop the bleach from continuing to eat away at the fabric.

Mix 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide with 8 cups of water in a tub or bin. Soak the shirt in this for a few minutes. You’ll see the water turn yellow — that’s the chemical reaction doing its job.

Step 5: Wash It Like Normal

Toss the shirt in the washing machine with detergent. Dry it as usual.

And boom — your one-of-a-kind reverse tie dye is ready to wear!

Final Thoughts

This was such a fun experiment. I love the fiery orange color it left behind. Next time, I might try re-dyeing over it with purples or blues for a layered look.
