Wondering which tie-dye kit to buy? I tested the top Amazon kits—Doodle Hog, Tulip, and Winston—to find the best tie-dye kit on Amazon.
Ready to tie dye but not sure which kit to buy? I tested three of the most popular tie dye kits on Amazon—Tulip, Doodle Hog, and Winston—to see which one gives you the most vibrant results, easiest experience, and best bang for your buck. Here’s a breakdown of how each one performed.

1. Tulip One-Step Tie Dye Kit
Best for beginners and group crafts.
Pros:
- Comes with everything you need: bottles, rubber bands, gloves, plastic table cover
- Tons of dye (36 colors!) with pre-measured powder in bottles
- Sturdy plastic storage container is a nice bonus
- Instructions and folding ideas included
Cons:
- Color fastness isn’t great, especially the lighter blues and greens
- Gloves are flimsy and slippery
- Instructions say 4–6 hours of setting time, but 24+ hours gives better results
Verdict: This is a great kit if you’re looking to get a wide variety of colors on a budget. The colors might not last long, and some of them aren’t very vibrant, but the low price makes it worth taking a shot
Below you can see the swatch test I did with the colors. As you can see, some are super vibrant, others aren’t. These sat longer than the recommended 4-6 hours (I’d suggest at least 24).

Can I ice dye with the Tulip kit?
Yes! The results I got I preferred over the liquid actually. Just know it uses a lot more dye so you won’t get as many projects out of the kit.

2. Doodle Hog Tie Dye Kit (Beach Colors)
Best for simple, curated projects.
Pros:
- Comes with soda ash (a good sign of better dye quality)
- Includes large dye bottles and refill powder for multiple uses
- Instructions and basic folding techniques included
Cons:
- No tablecloth or surface protection
- Rubber bands are low quality
- Some colors faded quickly, especially turquoise
- Bottles can leak a little
- Very limited color range (3 shades of blue in this set)
Verdict: A solid kit for curated, beachy color projects—just don’t expect bold colors across the board or fancy extras. There’s also a TON of dye in here, so if you’ve got a little birthday party happening and everyone wants to do the same color scheme, this might be a good option for you. The blues faded quite a bit though, so don’t expect the results to look like they do on the box.

Can I Ice Dye with the Doodle Hog Kit?
Absolutely! And the results were beautiful. Plus this came with refill packages for your bottles so instead of using them as liquid you can just put them right on the fabric and throw on some ice for an ice dye project.

3. Winston Tie Dye Kit
Best for variety and vibrant results.
Pros:
- Vibrant, saturated colors that hold up well
- Comes with 14+ colors, gloves, table cover, rubber bands, and instructions
- Bottles are clearly labeled with color names
- Colors stay bright, even after washing
Cons:
- Requires soda ash pre-treatment (not included)
- No storage box or case
- Gloves were okay, but not amazing
Verdict: This kit gave me the brightest results of all the kits I tried and it’s what I would buy again if I were to shop for a tie dye kit through amazon. It came with little refill packets which is a super nice plus and it means you can ice dye with ease.
Here is a towel I made to swatch all the colors.

Yep you can. And it will turn out stunning!

How Do I Rinse Out My Tie Dye?
I’m glad you asked. I wrote up a full summary for you for how I rinse out all of my projects. I’m typically using procion dyes, but this method will work for these kits as well.
Final Thoughts: Which One Is the Best Tie Dye Kit on Amazon?
- Best overall quality: Winston
- Best value for beginners: Tulip
- Best curated color set: Doodle Hog (Beach Colors)
If you’re new to tie dye and want everything in one package, go with Tulip. Want rich colors and don’t mind a little prep? Winston is your best bet. Prefer something more specific and low-key with a TON of dye to play with? Try Doodle Hog.
