Tie Dye Custom Baby Onesies

In this tutorial I show you 5 ways to tie custom baby onesies as well as how I used a dip dye method to dye with three different colors.

Most tie dye is done by putting the dye, mixed with water, into a squirt bottle. Not everyone has access to a squirt bottle so this tutorial will show you how to dip dye. You can dip dye using old Tupperware or really any water holding vessel. I used pots on my stove because heating the water requires less time in the dye pot. You don’t need a large vessel because these custom baby onesies are so tiny and cute!

This dip dyeing will work with natural dye goods too but you will need to have them stay in the water much longer so I’d suggest using some clothes pins to allow them to not completely submerge in the water!

5 Ways to Tie Onesies

Above I’ve got a video tutorial demonstrating exactly how I tied each onesie pictured here. I love tie dye and have never made two things match so get creative and remember it may not look how you pictured it looking!

How to Dip Dye

  1. To dip dye, you will start by adding water to your pots or bowls. The amount of water doesn’t really matter as long as you can dip as much of your cloth in as you’d like. I kept mine shallow because I was dyeing such small items.
  2. Now you will add some dye. Again, this depends on what you’re dyeing and how much water you have. I did not need much. In hindsight I wish I would have added darker green for a darker color.
  3. Dip your wet cloth in and depending on how saturated you’d like your color, leave it submerged. The longer you submerge the fabric the richer the color will be. I played around with this a bit, so every onesie ended up being a different shade. Another thing I did was dip half of one onesie in the evening blue and then submerged the whole thing in the navy blue for a darker color. It turned out pretty dang cool!
  4. Rinse your fabric until it runs clear and wash on cold.

My main suggestion with dip dyeing is to make sure you have colors that will not blend to make brownish hues. This means if you’re going to go for warmer colors keep them all warm. Don’t mix purple and yellows or you’ll get brown!
