Making your own baby wrap will not take you hardly any time at all and will save you so much money! This is a beginner project.
Whether you are nesting or looking to get someone you love a gift they will use for their baby every day, this baby wrap is an awesome project. I finished this up in about 30 minutes. The fabric I used was 60″ wide so I actually made THREE out of this one 5 yard strip of fabric and it took me maybe an hour to do all three!
I also dyed this after I made it. You could really do any type of dye. I’ve dyed one with avocado pit dye and quite a few using my indigo dye method.

DIY Baby Wrap
Making your own baby wrap will not take you hardly any time at all and will save you so much money! This is a beginner project.
Materials
- 5 Yards of Jersey Knit Fabric
- Thread
Tools
- Serger or Sewing Machine
- Scissors
- Yard Stick
- Fabric Chalk
Instructions
Lay out your fabric somewhere you have a lot of room and flat space. My fabric was 60" wide. On the 60" side mark with your chalk 20".
Measure another 20" from the same side about 30" lower. I did this so I could connect those two dots with my yard stick to ensure my lines were straight.
Now you will connect the dots and continue this line the whole length of the 5 yards.
Cut along this line using your fabric scissors.
Serge all four sides of the wrap. If you only have a sewing machine then I'd suggest folding each edge over about 1/4" and doing a straight stitch down the sides. You will want to pin it if you are doing it this way!

Are Baby Wraps Safe for Newborns?
Yes! When your baby can’t hold their head up quite yet, a baby wrap is the best way to do baby wearing because you can use the wrap to support their head unlike a Baby Bjorne or similar character.
How Long Can you Carry a Baby in a Baby Wrap?
You can as long as it’s comfortable for you and your baby. With my first I held him until about 4 months. My new baby is quite a bit smaller and may last a little longer. My first didn’t like to be swaddled or held toward 4 months so that’s a lot of why we stopped then! Time will tell with this one!
I’ve got another sewing baby project coming up for a DIY Boppy Cover so stay tuned! I also have a DIY baby swaddle as well as some DIY baby lotion.
