This natural wall hanging would be beautiful using shibori folds and/or turmeric powder! Don’t miss out on all my natural dye tutorials.

My wall was feeling a little bare, so I decided to whip up a wall hanging using one of my natural dyes. The awesome thing about this tutorial is you can adapt it to any wall size. In fact, if you want to make a few to hang all together that’s an option too!

The natural arras you’re about to create only requires a few simple things. Fabric, scissors, fabric adhesive, and an embroidery hoop. How simple is that?!

This post features madder root dye. I would write out the steps to that, but the good news is I already did! Madder root makes such a cool coral color and a little goes a long way (a lot like turmeric). I’ve used both the full root and the powdered root and they’ll both give you beautiful results.

Tools

  • Tools
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Cut your cotton fabric into strips with one large piece set aside.
  2. Dye your material. Featured here is madder root powder. I used a dip dye technique, but you can also use shibori folding techniques
  3. Put your large piece of fabric on the embroidery hoop.
  4. Coat one side of your dyed pieces with fabric adhesive.
  5. Lay the dyed fabric in any pattern you like or do what I did!
  6. Place the top portion of the embroidery hoop on layered fabric and ensure the fabric is stretch taught.
  7. Allow to dry before hanging

How do you hang a fabric wall hanging?

For this wall hanging you have a screw you can use to hang it so it’s really pretty simple. You’ll see pictured here that I actually didn’t even hang this I just rested it! But to hang it I would just measure the wall and center it to the space.
