Ice Dye with Rit Dyemore

Ice dyeing is fun as we are all aware. But can you dye your synthetic fibers using this method with Rit DyeMore?

This version of ice dye is a little different. If you are looking to ice dye natural fibers, see this post here. If you are interested in dyeing with natural fibers check out my natural dyeing! I also have a lot of options for how to tie-dye your fabrics using shibori folding techniques.

I really enjoy ice dyeing, and I also really enjoy using Rit Dyemore, so I wanted to see if the technique could work. I needed to make a few tweaks.

The main problem with this was of using synthetic dye, is that the synthetic fibers require heat. Obviously, ice isn’t quite conducive to that. But I used the ice to make the pattern and added the heat later. I’ll show you how below.

Materials

  • DyeMore Dye
  • Synthetic fiber material

Tools

  • Cooling rack
  • Ice
  • Saran Wrap
  • Microwave

Instructions

  1. Get your fabric wet and ring it out.
  2. Mix 1 part dye to 2 parts water in a bottle.
  3. Crumple up your fabric and set it on the cookie rack. The cookie rack is nice because it holds it all scrunched up.
  4. Place ice all over the scrunched-up material. The less ice you do the less white space you’ll have. I completely covered my cloth in ice.
  5. Squirt the dye all over the ice so it's fully saturated.
  6. Let it sit until the ice completely melts.
  7. Wrap your material in saran wrap so the fabric is completely covered and no air can get in the plastic seal.
  8. Microwave for 1 minute at a time until you feel the plastic hot to the touch, but not too hot to touch. Mine took 2 minutes.
  9. Rinse out your fabric until the water runs clear then put it in a wash on cold. After this initial wash, you should be ok to wash it with other colored clothing.

How Much Does Rit DyeMore cost?

You can find it for about $5 a bottle on their website, Joann and Michaels. Amazon also has lots of options but sometimes they get a little overpriced on low stock colors. (Around $10 per bottle.)

Will Dyemore work on cotton?

Yes! I’ve tried this and it totally works. So if all you have is DyeMore and a natural fiber, you will be good to go. However regular Rit Dye won’t work on synthetic materials.

    1. Got it fixed sorry about that! Put it on your ice and you’ll be good to go. Bonus, the dye should help melt the ice too.
