I love experimenting with natural dyes, but I often fail. Some colors just don’t turn out the way I’d like. So here I used rit color remover on naturally dyed fabric. In this video, I used red dirt dye. You can buy this color remover here. I pre-mordanted the fabric with soy milk before I did it.

This red dirt dye is not very colorfast. So, something like turmeric may not turn out as white.

Materials

  • Rit Color remover
  • Fabric

Tools

  • Stock pot
  • Tongs

Instructions

  1. Start by heating up your water, you can bring it to a boil just don’t have it boiling when you put the color remover in. I heat it until it is almost boiling.
  2. Sprinkle in some color remover, the more cloth, the more powder you will use. A little goes a long way and you can always add more later.
  3. Place your fabric in the water.
  4. Allow your fabric to sit in the hot water. With natural dyes, you won’t really see the color come out until you wash it. Keep the fabric in the pot for 30 minutes.
  5. Wash your fabric like normal.

Can I use Rit color remover with natural dye?

Yes, you can. I had pretty good results. Here’s the thing though, heating up naturally dyed fabric will loosen the color anyway. You may not need color remover to get the color out. It also was not completely gone in the end. There was still a slight tint.
