DIY Geode Tie Dye Festival Pants – Step-by-Step Ice Dye Tutorial

Want a festival outfit that’s as bold and unique as you are? These ice-dyed geode pants are a total showstopper—and they’re easier to make than you’d think.

How to Tie Dye Festival Pants with a Bold Geode Pattern

I started with a pair of Dharma Trading Co. Tiered Pants (they run big—I’m usually a large and could have gone with a medium). These rayon/cotton pants are perfect for ice dyeing because they soak up color beautifully and have a fun, flowy drape that’s ideal for music festivals or summer days.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Dharma Trading Co. Tiered Pants (or another 100% plant-fiber pant)
  • Procion fiber reactive dyes: Teal, Alchemist, Fire Red (or similar pinkish red), Kaleidoscope Eyes
  • Sinew for tying (or strong string)
  • Ice for the dye process
  • Magic Tracks or a wire rack to elevate your project above runoff (find my favorite tools in my Amazon storefront)
  • Gloves, soda ash soak (optional), and buckets or totes for melting ice

Folding & Tying the Pants

To create bold, organic geode patterns, I grabbed a random spot on the outer thigh and wrapped it with sinew about 3–5 times per “nodule.” I purposely made each section slightly misshapen so the pattern would look like natural geodes rather than perfect rings. I repeated this until I had 3–4 big nodules along the pants.

Tip: If you want more white space in your final design, wrap three times and pull tight before wrapping again. For less white, wrap five times and pull tight once.

Dyeing the Festival Pants

I placed the tied pants on a Magic Tracks rack over a bin so the ice melt could drip away. To make the white lines stand out, I brushed teal dye directly under the ice along each sinew line. This step isn’t required, but it really helps emphasize those dark rings once rinsed.

Next, I covered the entire piece with ice and sprinkled on my main colors:

  • Alchemist – a purple-blue splitter that gives gorgeous depth.
  • Fire Red or a similar reddish-pink – adds vibrant contrast.
  • Kaleidoscope Eyes – a green with blue and purple undertones that complements Alchemist beautifully.

I let the first layer of ice melt completely, then added a second layer of ice to ensure the color penetrated to the bottom. The bottom of the pants turned out lighter than the top on purpose for soft variation.

Rinsing & Washing

After at least 24 hours of melting and setting, I rinsed in cool water until it ran mostly clear, then bumped to hot water and finally washed on a hot cycle with a bit of Dawn dish soap to remove excess dye. For more on rinsing and setting color, see my soda ash and rinse-out guide. Because these pants are dense, it took a little muscle to rinse thoroughly.

The Final Result

The finished festival pants are full of swirling geodes and bold, high-contrast lines thanks to the teal-under-ice technique. The mix of Alchemist, Fire Red, and Kaleidoscope Eyes makes a color palette that’s both deep and bright—perfect for summer concerts and music festivals.
